Word order: verb second and subordinate clauses
German word order follows firm rules. Getting them right is one of the quickest ways to raise accuracy marks.
Verb second
In a main clause the conjugated verb is the second idea: Ich spiele heute Fußball. Heute spiele ich Fußball. If something else comes first, the subject moves after the verb.
Subordinate clauses
After subordinating conjunctions such as weil, dass, wenn, obwohl and als, the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause, and a comma separates the clauses: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Coordinating conjunctions
und, aber, oder, denn and sondern do not change word order: Ich bin müde, denn ich habe schlecht geschlafen.
