How International A level Mathematics works

Start here: the units, the allowed combinations and when you can sit them for Pearson Edexcel International AS and A level Mathematics.

Six units for the A level

Every Mathematics unit is a separate 1 hour 30 minute exam.

The unit pool

Mathematics, Further Mathematics (XFM01 / YFM01) and Pure Mathematics (XPM01 / YPM01) all draw on the same units.

Planning

P1 to P4, M1, M2, S1 and S2 can be sat in October, January and June. D1, M3, S3 and the Further Pure units are January and June only. Most schools sit P1 and P2 in Year 12 and P3 and P4 in Year 13.

Worked example

A student wants Mathematics for an engineering course. Which applied pair suits mechanics-heavy study?

  1. The allowed pairs are M1 and S1, M1 and D1, M1 and M2, S1 and D1, S1 and S2.
  2. M1 and M2 give the most mechanics.

Answer: M1 and M2

Key idea: International A level Mathematics (YMA01) = P1, P2, P3, P4 plus an allowed applied pair. International AS (XMA01) = P1, P2 plus M1, S1 or D1.

Check yourself

  1. What is the cash-in code for the full International A level in Mathematics?
    • XMA01
    • YFM01
    • WMA11
    • YMA01
    Show answer

YMA01. YMA01 is International A level Mathematics; XMA01 is the AS; YFM01 is Further Mathematics; WMA11 is unit P1.

  2. How many units make up International A level Mathematics?
    Show answer

    6. Four pure units (P1 to P4) plus two applied units.

  3. Which applied pair is NOT allowed for International A level Mathematics?
    • M1 and S1
    • S1 and D1
    • M1 and M2
    • M2 and S2
    Show answer

    M2 and S2. The allowed pairs are M1 and S1, M1 and D1, M1 and M2, S1 and D1, S1 and S2. M2 and S2 is not one of them.

  4. Which unit has the code WMA12?
    • P2
    • P1
    • M2
    • S2
    Show answer

    P2. WMA11 to WMA14 are P1 to P4, so WMA12 is P2.

  5. In 2026/27, when can you sit D1 (WDM11)?
    • October, January and June
    • June only
    • January and June only
    • January only
    Show answer

January and June only. The 2026/27 manual lists D1 in January and June only.

  6. Which set makes International AS Mathematics?
    • P1, P2 and one of M1, S1 or D1
    • P1, P2, P3
    • P1 and M1 only
    • P1 to P4
    Show answer

P1, P2 and one of M1, S1 or D1. International AS Mathematics is three units: P1, P2 and one applied unit.
