Development tools: IDEs and version control
Edexcel IAL Computer Science · WCP01 Principles of Computer Science
Programmers use integrated development environments (IDEs) to write and debug code, and version control systems to manage changes. You need their features, benefits and drawbacks (spec points 6.3.1 and 6.3.2).
IDE features
An integrated development environment (IDE) is a single application that provides tools to write, run, test and debug programs.
- Text (code) editor: with syntax highlighting, automatic indentation and line numbers, making code easier to read.
- Autocomplete: suggests and completes variable names, functions and keywords as you type, saving time and reducing typing errors.
- Syntax checker: highlights syntax errors (for example a missing colon or bracket) as you type or before running.
- Debugger: helps find logic and runtime errors:
- breakpoints pause the program at a chosen line;
- stepping runs the program one line at a time (step over, step into a function);
- memory (variable) inspection shows the current value of each variable, like an automatic trace table.
Benefits: faster development, fewer errors, everything in one place. Drawbacks: can be complex to learn, uses system resources, and beginners may rely on it without understanding errors.
Version control systems
A version control system (VCS) records changes to files over time so that any earlier version can be recovered and several people can work on the same code.
- A repository stores the project and its full history.
- Each saved set of changes is a commit, recording who changed what, when and why (a commit message).
- Branches let a developer work on a feature separately; branches are later merged back. Conflicting edits to the same lines must be resolved.
- Changes can be rolled back to a working version if a bug is introduced.
- Distributed systems give each developer a full copy of the repository; a central server often holds the shared copy.
Benefits: full history and backup, safe experimentation, team collaboration, accountability. Drawbacks: takes time to learn, merge conflicts must be resolved, and it needs discipline (frequent, clear commits).
Worked example
A program crashes with a wrong total in a loop. Describe how IDE debugging tools could find the fault.
- Set a breakpoint at the start of the loop.
- Step through the loop one line at a time.
- Inspect the values of the total and the counter after each step.
- Spot the line where the total first becomes wrong, and fix it.
Answer: Breakpoint, step, inspect variables to locate the faulty line.
Check yourself
- What does a breakpoint do?
- Pauses the program at a chosen line so its state can be examined
- Deletes a line of code
- Splits the program into two files
- Speeds the program up
Show answer
Pauses the program at a chosen line so its state can be examined. Execution stops there; you can then inspect and step.
- Which debugging feature runs a program one line at a time?
- Autocomplete
- Syntax highlighting
- Stepping
- Committing
Show answer
Stepping. Stepping executes a single line or statement each time.
- Which is a benefit of autocomplete?
- It reduces typing errors in names and speeds up coding
- It finds logic errors automatically
- It encrypts the source code
- It stores every previous version of the file
Show answer
It reduces typing errors in names and speeds up coding. Correctly spelled names are inserted for you.
- A new commit introduces a serious bug. Which version control feature helps most?
- Autocomplete
- A breakpoint
- A syntax checker
- Rolling back to an earlier working version
Show answer
Rolling back to an earlier working version. The history lets you return to a known good state.
- Why do developers use branches in a version control system?
- To delete the history of a project
- To work on a feature separately without affecting the main code until it is merged
- To compile code faster
- To check syntax
Show answer
To work on a feature separately without affecting the main code until it is merged. Branches isolate work in progress.
- Explain one benefit of version control for a team of programmers.
Show answer
Several people can work on the same project at once; changes are tracked with who made them, and they can be merged, so work is not overwritten or lost.. Focus on collaboration and tracking.
- Which IDE feature would highlight a missing closing bracket before the program runs?
- Memory inspection
- Syntax checker
- Version control
- Stepping
Show answer
Syntax checker. Syntax checkers find rule-breaking code.
